Rail Recruitment Project: HS2

Who Did We Work With?

This project is being run by Keltbray, one of the leaders in construction engineering. The team at Keltbray manage projects like HS2 that feature innovative engineering solutions in building and infrastructure.

The Project

Keltbray is delivering five ventilation shafts for Align (Bouygues, VolkerFitzpatrick, and Sir Robert McAlpine) for HS2. The two enormous 2,000-tonne tunnelling machines (Florence and Cecilia) digging the high-speed rail tunnels under the Chilterns will meet all five ventilation shafts that will be about 5km apart between Great Missenden & Chalfont St Peter.

Having already reached the first of five, which is a 78-metre-deep shaft at Chalfont St Peter, Florence and Cecilia are heading to the second shaft, which is a 48-metre vent shaft. The shafts will regulate airflow and quality, temperatures in the tunnel, provide access for emergency services, and will allow for smoke to be extracted in the event of a fire. Once complete, the head houses will blend in with the local surroundings and habitat.

Keltbray will provide reinforced concrete works at the base of the shafts to create a collar structure to enable the Tunnel Boring Machines (Florence & Cecilia) to pass through the base of the shaft. Internal shaft construction works to build slip-formed concrete cores and lining walls will also take place. Additionally, they will be undertaking excavation and substructure construction of the head house buildings.

What We Did

PSI Global’s Rail Recruitment team have been providing CPCS Traffic Marshalls, Slingers, 360 Excavator Ops, Shuttering Carpenters, Steel Fixers, Groundworkers, and Scaffolders on the project.

Our team regularly make visits on-site, and have provided medicals, upskilling and training, and have been using local operatives to help support the local economy. The Rail Recruitment team at PSI Global also has plans to look at engaging apprentices and to engage with a wider variety of groups to start work on-site.

The Results

So far, the Rail Recruitment Team at PSI Global have recruited workers across the UK for various roles on HS2. These roles include Storeperson, Traffic Marshall, Shuttering and Steel Fixers, Machine Ops, Slingers, Crane Supervisors, and Groundworkers.
