Going the Extra Mile Winner: Tom Spike

Our Going the Extra Mile programme highlights the great work our team is doing for our workers across the UK. This month we’re recognising one of the members of our Construction recruitment team, Recruitment Resourcer Thomas Spike!

Meet Tom

Tom started working at PSI Global in June 2021, joining the construction team after having some previous recruitment experience within the healthcare sector. He initially came into the team as an apprentice but quickly moved up to his current role of Recruitment Resourcer. He was instantly a great fit for the team as well as the company with our priority of putting our workers first. “My motivation comes from a feeling of responsibility for both the workers out on site and the progress made on a day-to-day basis on-site,” he explained.

Tom was nominated by Operations Manager Sarah Ainsworth and Construction Directors Chris Chapman and Mike Kinealy, and has been working directly or indirectly with all three since starting last year.

Sarah has found his greatest strengths to be his friendliness, helpfulness, and approachability. Both Mike and Chris have echoed this, sharing how hardworking, dedicated, and committed he is to the team and to the candidates he works with. “His commitment when in work of doing the best for every task is second to none,” added Mike.

Tom’s work motto is “don’t allow things out of your control to cause you stress or unhappiness,” something he has likely put into practice when it comes to ensuring he continues to grow in his own career and that our workforce is well taken care of.

Putting Our Workers First

For Tom, putting our workers first means their needs and general wellbeing come before anything else. “We have a responsibility to take care of all of our workers and to ensure they have as positive an experience as possible when working with PSI Global.” And that positive outlook hasn’t gone unnoticed by his colleagues.

When Sarah put forth her nomination for Tom, she noted that his attitude towards work as well as his help of others stood out, as well as “the feedback we have had from candidates on how much they like dealing with him.” Construction Director Mike Kinealy agreed, sharing that “Tom is always professional, sincere, and compassionate to every candidate that calls in.”

While his colleagues have certainly noticed, our workers have as well. Recent feedback has come through for Tom that has been very positive. Groundworker Paul Kunditi said that Tom helped him get into work and is “always there to support when I need him.” 360 Operator R Banister remarked how “friendly and approachable” Tom was, and that the communication he received was great.

It has always been important to us as a company that our team members ensure our workers have everything they need to get the job done, and that they’re well looked after. Sarah also shared that Tom deserved the nomination this month because of his dedication to putting our workers first, “He’s always willing to help, and he’s great with the candidates. They really value the way that he treats them.”

Looking Ahead

While he continues to work hard for each worker he places on-site, he also continues to work hard to grow as a recruiter. “The biggest lesson I have learned in my time here is having patience,” he explained. “The ability to stop and think about multiple, different solutions before committing to one without weighing up pros and cons.”

Continuing to grow in his career is something he’s certainly looking to build on, with Tom looking to increase his network of labour force, as well as increase the frequency that he’s able to attend site. Chris also shared about Tom’s progression that he is a “valued member of the team who we see going through the ranks of the business. He’s a true asset!”

All of our winners are awarded both a prize of their choice as well as a donation to a charity of their choice. Tom has decided to put his donation towards PSI’s food bank collection. As we collect donations, these go to the West Everton Community Centre, a local organisation that describes itself as, “a resident-led organisation that ensures residents have a voice at all levels on issues that affect their community.”
