Going The Extra Mile: Plymouth for the Win

Last month Yasmin Lobb and Cameron Smith from our Plymouth office received the Employer of the Year award from Seetec Pluss, leading to them being nominated for and receiving our own Going the Extra Mile award for March.

Meet the Team

Yasmin has been with PSI Global since January 2021, until recently working on-site at Devonport Dockyard. As work started picking up and getting busier on-site, we were able to expand the team and bring on Cameron in November 2022. “Having Cameron supporting the day-to-day operations meant that I was able to help a little more with CSR,” explained Yasmin. “I also have had the time to attend the mental health first aid course and attend more job fairs – including the recent one with Seetec Pluss where we won Employer of the Year!”

Both Yasmin and Cameron are driven by a similar motivation to help get people in the local area back to work, and ensuring both the candidates and client have everything they need. Cameron shared with us that his primary motivation “is helping people and providing support to those in need.”

They were nominated by Industrial Services and Marine Director Rebecca Law in acknowledgement of their hard work and the Employer of the Year award recently won . “Winning the award from Seetec Pluss showed the recognition for all of the hard work they’ve done in the local community in Plymouth,” she explained.

Life at PSI Global in Plymouth

Despite being in Plymouth, the two have never felt like they’re far away from the rest of the team in Liverpool, Belfast, and Rosyth. Yasmin pointed out that, “even though we’re based down in Plymouth and others in our team are scattered across the UK, our weekly Teams catch up brings us all together. I think we all work great as a team leaning on each other when needed.”

Cameron echoed the togetherness of the Industrial Services team and said that despite being ‘remote’ from the rest of the team, it never feels like it and everyone is easy to communicate with.

Both have found working at PSI Global to be a great opportunity, with Cameron sharing that he loves the independence and respect that he’s given by management. Yasmin revealed how approachable everyone is from senior management to colleagues in other departments, stating that “PSI Global is the best company I have worked for.”

The two have had an array of projects to work on, and for Cameron the most interesting has been working on the Volkerstevin site. “There’s a wide variety of roles available, which means I’m constantly learning new things within the construction industry,” he said. And he’s not just learning about new things in the construction industry but has learned new skills on the job to be able to provide more support to Yasmin. In his current role, he holds most of the interviews, makes initial contact with many of our candidates, and provides support during the onboarding process for our client’s sites.

Having been initially brought in to work on Devonport Dockyard, Yasmin found that over time she had, “become an expert in security clearances over the last three plus years.” Looking back at the number of BPSS packs she completed for candidates during that time, the number added up to almost 1,000!

Growing the Company and Culture

As PSI Global continues to grow, so does the culture within the company. For Yasmin, this extends from everyone working for PSI to our candidates on-site and people in the communities we support. “PSI Global genuinely care about people.”

Cameron has found that working for PSI means working with people who are approachable, friendly, and helpful. “I think the level of respect between staff is the most glaring thing I’ve noticed.”

And as we continue to grow, so will the scope and number of projects our team has to work on. At the moment, the main project for Yasmin and Cameron is working with and supporting Volkerstevin within Devonport Dockyard, managing the onboarding process and day to day duties for our workers on-site.

They’ve just recently moved into an exciting new office space, have the Langage Power Station shut down in May, and have more community projects to look forward to. Cameron also added that he’s also been providing support to other members of the Industrial Services team, a learning process that he’s very much enjoying.

Life Outside of PSI Global

Everyone needs a little unwind time or something to look forward to outside of work, and our Plymouth team are no different.

Yasmin is a social butterfly. She loves going on holiday, going away at the weekend, and visiting her local pub. She’s a regular at her local gym and has the most adorable dogs that she’s absolutely obsessed with and walks to several great spots around Plymouth.

Cameron shared his passion for making and performing music and the exciting year he’s had so far, even performing at a few open mic nights. “One was held at our local Theatre Royal which was in front of 150-200 people. I love learning and trying new things, but music is the main one.”
